Gary Lewis served for 10 years as senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Rocklin, California, before founding New Life Marketplace Ministries (NLMM) and moving to El Salvador. He and Karen gave up a combined six figure family income and sold their beautiful home to live on less than $24,000 a year, which included all the expenses of the ministry. They learned Spanish while taking a small group of 12 Christians in Apopa, El Salvador, and building them into a congregation of 200. They helped the Apopa church buy property and build a new building. They also trained leadership, including a young man from Omaha, Nebraska, to stay and help the church grow. God called the Lewises back to California where Gary led the Placer Heights Baptist Church in Placerville, California, while serving as President of NLMM. At this time, because another ministry in Dallas, TX, had a similar name to NLMM, the name of the ministry was changed to Marketplace Missions, Inc. After 3 years as pastor, the Lewises were called to be the Senior Law Enforcement Chaplain for Placer County, Auburn, CA. In his second year as chaplain, Gary received a clear call from God to go to Baja California and do ministry.
